Community-engaged research to develop a Chicago violence research agenda and recommendations to support future community engagement

Abstract Background Chicago has a history of gun violence with some neighborhoods, particularly Black and Brown communities, being disproportionately affected male youth experiencing an even more disparate impact. Too often, prevention research is developed carried out little or no input from the people living in most communities. The objective Community-Academic Collaboration to Prevent Violence (CACPVC) was bring together individuals impacted communities academic researchers other community stakeholders discuss co-create agenda that addresses topics mutual concern, recommendations for engaging including members organizations funders research. Methods From 2014 2015, seven defined regions across were recruited participate. An organization network gathering held each region researchers, funders, representatives prevention. Open forums then took place community. data by shared followed facilitated group discussions recorded scribes. Notes thematically coded, grouped, compiled after which list refined CACPVC Work Group, allowing investigator triangulation. A survey disseminated prioritize topics. Results Seven gatherings (127 attendees) (133 held. Topic areas identified during included root causes/cycle violence, racism bias/structural trajectory protective factors nonviolence, geographic pattern change, strategies, youth, family factors, school, police, gangs/street organizations, media public perceptions. Recommendations support engagement grouped as role reducing research, relationships respect, academic-community communication, financial considerations, training, practical design, sharing results, communication about use data, funders.
